The Chairman of the Ghana League Club Association (GHALCA) Kudjo Fianoo has launched the 2016 Presidential Cup billed for Friday July 1 at the Accra Sports Stadium.
The competition will involve Premier and Division one league clubs battling it out at the various league centres, with the two glamorous clubs in the country, Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko playing for the ultimate trophy.
The competition is to set the tone for a peaceful election and the commemoration of Ghana’s 56th Republic Day Anniversary and will see President John Dramani Mahama in attendance.
Speaking at the launch on Wednesday at the Accra Sports Stadium, the sponsors of the competition, ANFD International announced its preparedness to be part of the competition and donated an undisclosed amount as part of its Cooperate Social Responsibility.
The Regional Director of ANFD International Mamouda Seidu, said‘‘it is an opportunity to showcase what we do. It is a great honour to invest in football because it brings happiness and joy to most of us.’’
The Chairman of GHALCA said his outfit seeks to organise a unique competition to attract more sponsors in future and assured sponsors of a successful event.
Mr Fianoo said he was glad Hearts and Kotoko accepted to participate in the event. Hearts won the previous encounter 5-4 on penalties in Accra.
The Chairman of Hearts of Oak Strategy Committee, Vincent Odotei- Sowah, commended the sponsors for the partnership and assured that Hearts will deliver an excellent display against arch rivals Kotoko.
He said ‘‘we don’t want Kotoko to equal our records in the President Cup competitions and the own goal that happened in the Premier league against Kotoko won’t repeat again. We are looking for the opportunity to beat them in Accra and deliver the trophy for our fans’’.
Odotei- Sowah was confident that Hearts will be victorious when they engage Kotoko in the second round of the Ghana Premier League.
The Chief Executive Officer of Kotoko, Samuel Opoku Nti revealed that ‘‘Kotoko would employ new tactics to beat hearts again”, adding that, “Hearts most times lose to Kotoko in Accra and history will repeat itself’’.
The Minister of Youth and Sports Hon. Nii Lantey Vanderpuye pledged his outfit’s support to ensure a successful competition.
